Hong Kong Fine Wine Auction Sets Records

An auction of fine wine held in Hong Kong last month raised a record HK$34,841,396 ($4.4 million) with an 86 per cent sale rate, underlining the growing Asian appetite for fine wine.

The sale brought by California-based wine auctioneer Spectrum Wine Auctions, took place on March 23 and 24, 2012 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Hong Kong.

“The Spring 2012 Auction continues to reinforce that Hong Kong remains in its leadership position as the best place for live wine auctions, shattering five existing records in just two days,” said Spectrum Wine Auctions president Jason Boland.

New records included 12 bottles of 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg at $19,120, six magnums of 2001 Château d'Yquem at $10,755, and 12 bottles of 2005 Rousseau Chambertin at $23,900.

Boland added that the high online and phone contingent added another dimension to the bidding.

“While on-site the room was packed with frenzied bidders looking to take home the world's finest Bordeaux, Burgundies and other rarities. Perhaps even more interesting was the huge phone and online contingent of bidders from around the globe, chasing these finest of wines,” he said.
